Changes in the League - continued

December 12, 2007

I was going to comment to the responses in the previous blog but I thought I would start another one so it doesn’t get too deep in comments.

Excellent responses by both Ann Marie (gotmewrong) and Larry (Pinkdog).

I guess we all had and have the same impression when it comes to the League.

It was originally a place to meet people and learn about the game of poker with no cost and no “requirements”.

Learning and teaching was fun. I get just as much enjoyment teaching someone as I do playing the game.

Maybe we get so “emotional” about the whole thing because we have developed friendships along the way which makes it harder to let go.

Personally, at this point, I probably won’t quit. I don’t play that much with the League anyway because of my time constraints but every once in a while when I have the time, I do play. There are a select few in the League that I enjoy playing with, and at least in the League games, you are pretty much assured you will have a pleasant table with friendly people. (most of the time)

If I get “kicked out” because I don’t meet the requirements, then I guess that’s just the way it goes. I’ll find some other place because I am sure they are out there.

I have never looked for nor joined another League so I would have to do some shopping but I am sure there are plenty of Leagues around.

Honestly, if Rich came to me and said “I’ll set it up the way you want.” I don’t know what I would say.

If I was running it would I want to go back to the days of “come one, come all.” Freerolls, freerolls, freerolls? With all of that comes the bitching and moaning which appears to be greater when freerolls are involved for some reason.

I think Rich’s whole point with this is to keep the freeloaders out. Keep the people who only show up for the freerolls out or make them do something to earn the right to play.

This I understand, however, it is a major shift in philosophy from when he started.

Now, you have to pay to join, learn and play. I know, its only a few bucks a month but it is still money.

I would suppose that managing an “open” forum would be quite complicated. I think this is why the admins in the League are supporting this too. It is a lot of work for people who do other things too.

If it was me, I think I would ask the members. I would explain the situation and see what ideas people have. We have a lot of creative people in the league who could come up with some ideas.

How do you keep the league open to all, but at the same time, have a different tier, or level, for those who have progressed in their game?

How do you design the games to try to make managing them less time constraining?

We were considering this when thinking of a possible club. Voting people to a higher level is pretty subjective but then again, it is a club.

Actually, the division idea currently being set up may work for something like that.

First Division members are the new ones, freeroll players, etc.

Second Division members are the small buy-in people and occasional freeroll players(you can always play in lower division games but not higher division games).

Third Division members are higher stakes players.

The only thing you need to consider is how to move up in the divisions. Points, votes, etc.

Again, more management…….

It sure is complicated….I just want to play once in a while…lol

See ya all soon.

As always, comments welcome……

Hi Dave.. I have kept my comments to a bare minimum so far, I am sure when I get around to making my own blog entry I’ll have more than enough to say about the ‘forum’ debacle.

I’ll summarise a few thoughts though. Sorry if this not very constructive it is difficult for me to feel positive about a forum which is being run by idiots.

First off, running a forum is only as complicated as you make it. With these off the shelf forums you can set up a board in 5 minutes. The only complicated part or area that needs planning is how you are going to lay out the forum. You no longer need to be a computer geek to do this these days.

If the board (any board) is set up correctly, with some preplanning and thought gone into it, then the board for the most part will run itself. All that is required is some topic and post moderation by selected mods etc. It will become time consuming ONLY if you constantly fiddle and change and meddle with settings etc

I will say this about joining a poker league, assuming you are relatively new and still learning the game, it will teach you the meaning of tightening up your game etc. Yet the real worth of playing with people that are more experienced than you is when they take you aside and pass on some of that knowledge or share it with you through their playing of the game with you.

What I learned from that particular league was how to educate myself on poker, I don’t recall one incident of a senior player helping me or trying to help me, including moderators and the admin. I made some friends from the league with whom I now chat to and play poker with meeting up on Skype and that is where 90% of my poker education came from, definitely not from the actual league or forum. I’ll explain some things about this topic in my next post on my blog.

I doubt you’ll see many of the real players kicked out if any. The one time players and free roll artists will find themselves pruned probably, that is until the Admin decide free rolls are the way to go again (hmm 3 months time?) and open up the doors and invite all and sundry in. Lol You just know it is gonna happen sometime, again..

There are a lot of leagues and forums out there Dave and with hand on heart from all the ones I have seen and visited there is nowhere near the level of drama and histrionics you see on the PCS boards. All forums possess their allotted quota of nincompoops, donk players, donk posters etc.

Not that many seem to have the same level of nincompoops trying to run the site though, those ones have by natural selection become somewhat of a rarity.

I agree it is a major shift in thinking if the idea now is to keep the “free-rollers out” it seems like only yesterday we had all had to endure the “35 post” and you are in, fiasco. Or those free-roll Weekends where there were 4 games a day.. lol

In the comments of your last post Anne Marie mentioned the board had changed from a social area with free speech to being similar to a dictatorship where only comments or posts that followed the ‘party’ line were allowed. Rather ironically when I pointed this out on the forum I was banned for doing so..

Guess that is called hitting the nail right on the head with that call.. and subsequent response from Herr Admin.

Good luck with the new regime Dave and see yah on the felt as always..

I should have not brushed everyone with such a broad brush. There are some people that are in or were in that league that were/are prepared to help other people.

Notably non are Admin except Gopher and I would argue his status as an Admin. lol Sorry bud..

All the bloggers by definition are trying to share their stuff with everyone. Pinkdog I know has taken several of the members aside and helped them immensely with their games.

Apologies to those that do and are trying to help each other, despite the best efforts of the new (is there an ‘e’ in) Third Reich?
