About Gopher
February 6, 2005
Hi all, I am The Gopher, aka Dagopher, gofer1971, gofer71, Pokerscot and a few others at most online poker sites. I’m 36 years old and live in Scotland, UK, with my wife and 2 kids.
I learned to play poker around 20 years ago, although it’s only in the last seven or eight years that I’ve played regularly, and in particular, online.
I first learned to play 5 card draw and 5 card stud as a teenager with my mates. It was quite profitable for me once I had gained a good grounding in the games. Then in the nineties, a UK TV channel Broadcast a programme called ‘Late Night Poker’. This was the first time poker had been televised and it was the start of all the poker we see on TV today. (Yes, it was a concept that started in the UK!)
The game they played was No Limit Texas Hold’em. At first I was intrigued at this ‘new’ game (new to me anyway!) but was soon hooked. Unfortunately, there was nowhere to play the game. Very few casinos in the UK held regular poker games, and those that did usually played Omaha games. Thank God that online poker was just around the corner!
As with most online players, my poker life started out playing in freerolls. I joined a forum that had private games and slowly but surely I started to build a bankroll. I have only deposited around £50 ($100) into online sites in total. Any new site I play is funded by the profits I make at other sites. I have also cashed out several thousand dollars in that time. It may not be much for the amount of time that I’ve been playing online poker but considering the majority of game I’ve played have been for low stakes (mostly under $5) I’m quite happy with my winnings. Also, I played purely for the fun of it.
But now, after a hard kick from the Suited Joker’s mob, I’ve realised that I should be playing bigger games. I should be taking my poker a bit more seriously as I could start making a tidy sum of money for myself! And that’s one of the reasons for the blog. It gives you an insight into my world, while hopefully giving good advice to the novice/intermediate player. It also give these players a chance to reply back with their own musings.
So I hope you enjoy the blog, and will contribute by replying to the posts. There’s always something new to learn and I know that there is loads more I could learn so any advice or comments are most welcomed.
See ya on the felt – virtual or otherwise!
About Me..
February 6, 2005
Hi I am Paul or Paulie, your choice, or online to my poker buddies I am known as Blagger or Blagz. I am a 49 year old (going on 19) male, living in Swindon (yeah I know my bad) England UK.
I started playing poker online about three years ago, after watching an episode of some poker show on the TV. I signed up with two of the more established bookmakers here in the UK and deposited about £25 into each one. Then for the next three months I proceeded to play free-rolls exclusively.
Having eventually won a couple of these marathon games (often lasting 6-9 hours) and pocketing the obscene amount of £2.37 or there-abouts for my trouble I girded me loins and entered my first real money game.
It was at William Hills and it was a £10 ($20) MTT and this is where the barbs on the hook that is online poker really took hold. Only having played poker in any form for three months I felt well out of my depth, so decided on a plan of only playing good pairs or an ace with a picture card.
Unbelievably this tactic saw me get to the final table, finishing 3rd and pocketing a nice little wedge of money! That was it, the proverbial hook, line and sinker was gobbled up eagerly by yours truly. And here we are today.
