What a Difference a Post Makes

January 15, 2007

Sheesh what a difference a post makes.I stated in my last blog entry “I know I am gonna come in for some stick for that one” and I wasn’t wrong!

Since making the last blog entry, the proverbial poop hit the proverbial fan, feathers were not so much as ruffled but plucked out by the handful and ….. it was brilliant!

For all the good players in the league and all the good poker playing that happens in every league game, the league had somehow turned into a kind of ‘Pleasantville’. A great place to congregate and play some ‘home’ poker, but man was it ever like as I said before, a living breathing Groundhog Day!We somehow had all slowly succumbed to this soothing, comfortable same old, same old and from the inside looking out it was to hard to see it happening. Someone had to say it and I guess I said it. Some members took my words the wrong way and were all over me like a rash in the league forum, but several also stepped up to the plate and joined voices with me.For those that took offence to my statements I apologise, I in no way intended to offend anyone. I did try to deflect any antagonism in my last blog by preceding my critique with all the positive attributes of the league and members. This seems to have fallen on deaf ears for many and there is not much I can do about that, hopefully over time an understanding will emerge that will validate my opinion.

I think there is some validation already as there have been some changes not only in the format of the league but also in an awareness of some of the members.

Nothing like a bit of controversy to stir the mob eh?

The explosion of posts in the forum that erupted was great, all of sudden the non posters and sleepy heads were coming out of the woodwork. Voicing opinions and defending their league, this was needed in my opinion, simply because the league was dying. Many will not agree with that statement but in my opinion it was dying albeit very slowly.

The league owner had posted that he was on the cusp of maybe closing it down and no one seemed to respond to his statement. Well there were the usual moans and groans and stuff but no one seemed to be smelling the coffee…

Seems like everyone has java up their nasal passages these days though.:)

People are pushing themselves again or that is what it feels like, sharing ideas and strategies. There are posts on MTT’s that forum members are hitting collectively, posts on SNG’s wins, where to play and when to play. It’s great! And the league hasn’t suffered one bit for it, if anything there is even more community spirit and the leagues $2 tournaments are still running and I played in one yesterday!.

I am probably more likely to play some more league games, because it feels like the whole place has had some sort of rejuvenation. Don’t read me wrong here folks I ain’t saying that was down to me, not in the slightest. It’s down to all the folks that stepped forward and made some great constructive input and commitment to try and address things.

There’s an awful lot more I’d like to say on the matter, especially on some of the unbalanced criticism I was on the end of, but right now I’ll let sleeping dogs lie and see how things pan out.

Well how’s the MTT strategy going? Still early days, I have played 4 MTT’s with this new strategy, with varying degrees of success. There certainly isn’t much wasted time, or that is how it feels.

Once I went out real early, made 17th in a 150 seater in another. Then Friday played one 150 MTT with Gopher, where we both desperately trying to open our game up, but the ridiculous amount of bingo players in for a cash game was incredible!

We both made some small increases early but it was impossible to join the bingo-fest, we got through the first third of the MTT with nimble footwork, dodging the bullets, both took a couple of hits just before the break and both managed to recoup just after the break. Then weirdly we both went out at the same moment, Gopher had AK suited in the SB and caught the BB with a pocket pair and I hit a full boat on the SB and the BB had quads. Too surreal…

Played another MTT this morning just a small buy-in 100 seater, just to keep on with the strategy. Started awesome, first hand dealt I was on the button with 34 suited and had nearly the whole table flat call around to me. Anyone reading my strategy on ‘playing small connectors at the right time’ in the forum, will recognise this scenario immediately.

Had no problems limping in with them and the flop came low, some toe in the water bets came and I limped again to hit the straight on the turn. I trebled up on the first hand. I doubled up again very shortly after. Woot! The strategy was paying off, sitting in chip lead….

Sailed through to the last 12 and was by this time middle of the pack. I had just lost three consecutive big pots on races, each and every time I had been strongest hand when pushing it in.

Then I am dealt AK suited and raise 5x BB quite a hefty bet at this point, 35% of my stack, some dude went all in with 77 and …. I lost another race… Sheesh I need to get in the gym cos I am losing every race I am in it seems.

Couple hands later sitting with Q-10… flop comes JQ3… I raise 50% of my stack some guy goes all-in I follow he turns over J9 and turn comes 9.. So that was that.. pretty unlucky to not hit any of those races.. still I liked the strategy.

I never get bored, if I hit cool, I can play big stack poker, if I don’t I have to play good solid tight poker until I get enough chips to allow me to open up the book again. Still too early to call this yet, I’ll surely have a much better snapshot come the end of the month.

So nothing too controversial today, no one should be taking a contract out on me for this one… but yanno what?

I think I am starting to quite like controversy.

Today’s tip… If you are going to buy a crotch guard, buy the professional pre-stressed model. Take it from me. it’s worth the few extra pennies;)

Agreed Blags! the forum has livened up again. Just goes to show – a little controversy hurt no-one.
As for the MTTs, I’ll have to play in them with you again. One session, including the ‘late shift’ with Lippy, Jock and Pinky in tow, seemed to click my brain into gear for the next day. First off, I waltzed my way through a $5 omaha hi/lo s&g then went on to win a league freeroll. I still say it was going live with you guys, talking through our hands that got my noggin to actually start working.

I’ll catch up with you soon mate. That HAS to be done again!

Gofer, I like playing with blagger, lippy, and pinkdog too. It is a great learning experience being able to talk real time about the hands, players, etc.
I wonder if it would be worth it to schedule this kind of thing?
I know I benefit from it.

I agree also on this sharing the experience thing and I’ll include my thoughts on it in the next blog. :)

To be honest Dave, I didn’t think I would benifit so much. Just hearing others advise while playing your hands is great. It gives some reassurance that you are doing the right things. OK, at the end of the day its your own choice as you will have a knowledge of how the other players at the table are playing, therefore might not take all the advice going, but 99% of the time the advice is correct and definately works.

By the way, for those reading this, we are not colluding with each other. If we are at the same table and in a hand we DO NOT talk about it. We pride ourselves in trying to win without cheating. Just thought I’d make that clear!

I thought that went without saying but I am glad you mentioned it. For those that don’t know us, personally, it would never cross my mind to do that. What good would it do? I am in the game to learn, get better, and win on my own.
I also agree about making my own decision on how the play my hand.
The benefit I get is getting a diffferent perspective on how or what other people are playing with. This helps me in reading the table, other players, etc.
Anyway, it is fun and I get to learn too.

Got something to say?
