The problem with online poker…. part 2

March 10, 2008

I came to a conlusion the other night after being donked out of yet another tourny. Lets set the scene.

The game is a $10 headhunter tourny at William Hill (European site). 50% of the prize pool goes on everyones head and the other 50% contributes to the usual prize pool. I took someone out on the very first hand to double up in chips and claimed the money on his head. From then on I went virtually card dead, but managed to steal a few pots here and there.

Just over 2 hours into the tourny, I was short stack at the table with around 2700 in chipsand have been playing tighter than a duck’s anus. I’m in mid position and the action folds around to me. I have AsQs and as I’m shortstacked I go all-in. The table fold around to the small blind (3500 in chips) who insta-calls. Big Blind folds.

The cards are turned and he’s got Ks3s. All I could think was ‘what an idiot!’

Then comes the flop…. 4s3h8d …….. typical! But I’ve still got hope.

Then the turn brings 3c along with Kh on the river, giving him the full house and me shit-all, except a ticket to the rail.

I was first of all stunned, then rage hit me that someone could virtually put their tourny life on a K3 suited… and win through! I made my displeasure known to the muppet and also typed to the rest of the table that at the very least they now know who the table donkey is. I checked back later and he went out about 15mins after me.

I’m open to bad beats – they happen. But to be butchered by a donk, playing a totally donk hand at a time that no sane minded person would even consider, is really the pitts and it happens all too often. If I had to play like them would I get the donkey luck? Would I hell!

But I seem to get donked out in virtually every game I play. But this incident made me think quite indepth, and I’ve came to a few conclusions.

  • donks outweigh half-decent to good players at every online site. I would put it at a 70%-30% split. Even at that I think I might be a bit conservative.
  • you will be outnumbered by donks in virtally every game you play if you tend to hang around the lower stake buy-ins. Recent studies by some of the skype crew have found that even the $20 (and higher) tables have an abundance of donks.

So, how do you avoid the donks? The only way, as I see it, is to play much higher buy-ins – $50 upwards – or don’t play at all. Both these options are out for me. For one, I cannot afford to risk that type of money at the moment. My family life comes first and that’s where my finances must be directed. And I just cannot even bear to think about giving up poker. So, I’m just going to have to grin and bear it. I have to take the all the beats and infuriating bad plays/calls and just get on with it, in the knowledge that I played correctly.

My luck has to change sometime, hopefully soon! Now though, I have to do my homework…

I must not let the donks get to me.

I must not let the donks get to me.

I must not let the donks get to me…….

    Goph,
I hear ya! That is one of the reasons we started this forum. To have a place to get away from the Donks and once in a while have a well played, fun game.
I agree with your percentages. It sure seems like we are outnumbered. You would think though that since the odds are in our favor, we should be taking them out more then they take us out.
Did ya ever see the movie, 300? I think we are part of the 300. We may get killed but damit we are going down with honor and glory.

One of the skills required online is the ‘Art of Donk Dodging” should be a title of a good blog post for someone lol

    Good idea Blagz!
We could format it like the Art of War only have it as a “bible” for Donky Dodging…
