Playing cards or playing poker?

July 16, 2007

I was thinking about all of the discussion lately regarding bad beats, RNG’s, “fixed” games, etc.

Something came to mind that I would like to throw out there for comments.

Perspective is very important when discussing these things.

I think there is a big difference between playing cards, and playing Poker. Most of you who are reading this are Poker players. When we play, we “expect” certain things to happen in different situations. For example, a 5 or 10 times raise of the big bling pre-flop is supposed to tell everyone playing at the table that you have a good hand. Anyone calling this bet should be very strong too. So, when someone calls in this situation you don’t expect to see them winning the hand with a Jack 9 off because from your Poker playing perspective, they should have never called.

However, from the “just playing cards” perspective, your opponent may have played because thats his favorite hand or, they looked good, or he/she had a “gut” feeling, etc.

To the card player, this was a justified call.

Maybe, because of bankroll situations, or the “risk level” of the games that are played, we have put ourselves in situations where we are applying our Poker expectations against a bunch of people playing cards.

Or, considering the growth of Poker and the ease of being able to play, there are a lot more uneducated people out there playing. Those are the people who watch TV Poker and think that thats really how the game is played.

Anyway, its just a thought.

I will be out of town for the next couple of days, I may be on line at night from the Hotel if I get the time. I played some with Larry (Lippy stopped in for a few min. too) the other night (lost all three I played) so I need to re-build my bankroll. I need a Skype crew fix so I may be trolling around.

See ya all later! Comments Welcome.

A very valid point Dave! We do sometimes forget about those playing favourite hands etc.. Maybe we are playing at the wrong level and should be pushing ourselves to play higher limits where the ‘poker’ players live.

But, as you know, you have got to control your bankroll, therefore you might just have to grin and bear it amongst the ‘card’ players.
I think you need more luck against the ‘card’ players. They certainly seem to get it in abundance.

Will hopefully catch you around on Skype at some point this week – probably the weekend. We could do with a good get together to get some live discussion going… as well as a game or two as it seems to have been lacking of late, for a whole manner of reasons. It will maybe get a few of us more refocussed again!

I agree with the sentiment that we often-times give our opponents way too much credit, in the poker savvy department. I reckon we end up out-thinking ourselves sometimes ..

    Blagger,
The “big bling” is kind of like the Big Blind. However, when Monkeys are present, they look at it a little differently.
To the Monkeys, the chips are kind of like their cards. If they look pretty they play their cards no matter what they are. The chips are pretty so they call it bling. Hence, “big bling” and “small bling”. Also, there is the ever dangerous “all-in bling”.
And when they suck out and win, you get statements like “ba-da bling!” In Monkey talk, that means “I just won with my 9 2 off cause I saw em do it on TV once. Man, I am good and I got all your pretty chips”.
One of my posts will have to be a glossary of Monkey terms so we can all decipher what is being said.

Is this new language like street-bling? Do you know of any rap blingers I could download? Do they (the monkey blingers) have a dress code? … Do they have a motto? .. Like umm “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that bling”.. sorta thing? .. I wanna know more, lol.
